Lets try something different…

How many of us have tried counting calories, only to find ourselves depressed by all the overwhelming numbers? Or maybe you set a certain intake for yourself for the day, but eventually you cut yourself just one excuse that crushes your momentum for days or even more. How many of us look at the scale weekly, daily, or even more. Why is it that we are obsessed with our weight as a number? Why is it that when we work out, most of us track the time, steps, or calories burned?

Why are we so obsessed with numbers? Why cant we just act because we know we should, and because we really want what we’re working for in the long run ? It would make it so much more worth it to take things one step further wouldnt it? Imagine thinking before a meal, “I guess I don’t really need to eat all that.” Isnt that so much more empowering than being bound by a number? Then even if we eat only a little bit less, it has so much more worth. Just imagine how you would feel afterwards. Not thinking how you had to deprive yourself of “250″, but feeling good because you did something that was good for you. And not only that, but have you ever thought you had a great day dieting or working out, and then the numbers reared their ugly heads and you got totally bummed out?

Maintaining this lifestyle is about learning control and consistency. How many things in life can we constantly count, and manage to maintain even for a moderate period of time? It doesn’t make sense to focus so much on the act, instead of our condition and own self worth. We need to decide, not have numbers decide for us. Lets push for one more minute, without knowing how long we have ran. Lets push for 100 calories less, without knowing what we’ve already cut out. Who cares about the numbers, in the end the loss will come because we’re working harder. Lets be real, no matter how good the numbers look, we are guaranteed to fail eventually (at least temporarily). When it happens, (and it always does) we usually lose hope and always end up worse off then when we first stepped on the scale. All of a sudden, consistency goes out the window. By focusing so much on numbers, arent we really controlled by them? Its still telling them what we can and cant do, how we should or shouldn’t feel.

No more. Lets try something new. Lets scrap the numbers. No calories. No minutes. No Pounds. No Inches. Heres my idea.

1) Stop ourselves from stepping on the scale for just 2 weeks.
2) Always think for 5 minutes before we eat something. (Drinking a glass of water during this time especially helps!)
3) Eat only when we’re hungry, and stop when we’re full
4) Work out for just 5 more minutes each workout (a mental 5 minutes)

This is really basic, but I think everyone could better themselves by simply following these basics. We’re all different. Some big, some medium, and some small. Either way, we all just want to feel better about ourselves. So lets forget about the weight, and care about our self worth, and the rest will fall in place. I’ll let you all know how I do over the next couple days and would love to hear back from you all. I’m not going to share my gender, weight, my loss, or even age. I believe if we focus on our actions, and the fundamental reasons for acting, we will all get much more out of our weight loss experience, pounds included.

We can do this, just remember…

One Day at a Time.
